To have a successful swarovski crystal wedding shoes (or any other occasion shoes) there are a few things that an artisan has to keep in mind. The preparation of the surface is of paramount importance: even, properly treated surface will ensure the correct adherence of the glue and the flatback stones to the surface of the shoe. There are a few options within the surface preparation: If the shoe needs to be sanded off, painted and/or mended.
Leather shoes: Regular calf skin leather will absorb the glue beautifully so all you need to make sure of is that there is no wax residue from polishes or special finishes. Any ordinary leather cleaner should suffice to remove above mentioned materials from the leather and will prepare it for the Strass. If you want the seamless effect of absolute match of the chosen swarovski crystals to the surface of the shoes then the leather needs to be custom painted to match the colors. We recommend acrylic leather dye with metallic effect – it created a perfect backdrop fro the crystals for shine off of and to smooth out appearance of gaps between the stones. The less contrast there is between the shoes color and the Strass color the more of a Pave effect there is.
If the shoe is patent leather – one can choose one of the two options: glue right onto the patent surface – which is harder and slower process as one has to use a very precise amounts of glue and placement to successfully execute the job. The stones have to be checked for adherence – and improper glue proportions will result in stone slippage and stone loss.
Alternatively patent leather can be sanded off and then painted – but it needs to be done very carefully, with special very fine diamond sanding paper/machine so that the integrity of the leather in not compromised. After that a few layers of acrylic paint should even out the surface and prepare it for swarovski crystal beads for shoes.
If the shoes are made of glitter – they will have to be de-glitterized. That can be messy. You have to sand off the glitter and even out the surface underneath as much as it is possible – and then paint as instructed above. Similarly if the shoes are made of fabric (denim, canvas, other) it will have to be painted with a few layers of acrylic paint before Strass can be performed, unless you are planning on Hotfixing Swarovski Stones to the shoe – but that is another technique altogether.

We frequently hear people asking what size swarovski srystal shoes I use for shoes and the answer is that there can be any number of design choices based on your budget, desired look and the original design of the shoe. We like to use at least 4 or 5 sizes for the absolute pave effect. However one size can look amazing on a particular design and on the design elements such as straps, inserts, panels etc. One can combine two sizes and use them consistently to emphasize a certain design feature of the shoe. We recommend staying with Swarovski Flatback category sizes 7ss, 9ss, 12ss, 16ss, 20ss and 30ss. Any combination thereof will yield beautiful result.
The ultimate result is what matters: the quality, durability and beauty of your bespoke Swarovski Shoes is what we hold as our standard at By-K
It is important to understand that however well and durably executed Swarovski Crystal Shoes will be more fragile and susceptible to damage due to kicking and hitting the curbs, steps, stairs etc. The highest quality Strass will still have a minimal stone loss – based solely on the wearer’s accuracy of steps and circumstances of wear.
